Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Safety and Security Unit
Vision:
We aim to apply the concepts and principles of chemical, biological, and radiological safety and security in chemical storage facilities and scientific laboratories at the College of Education for Pure Sciences. This will be achieved through training courses, effective implementation of safety practices, and technical guidance to ensure the safety of all staff and students, as well as the wider community. We also strive to achieve excellence in community service and sustainable development through effective cooperation with civil defense institutions and community organizations.
Mission:
We are committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment by applying the highest standards of safety in all chemical, biological, and radiological fields. We provide support, training, and guidance to college staff working in chemical storage and laboratories, as well as to students, to ensure effective implementation of safety measures and provide a secure academic environment.
Objectives:
Increase awareness of the importance of safety and security through training courses on the risks of chemical and biological materials, prevention methods, and safe storage practices.
Monitor laboratories and storage facilities through scheduled and unannounced visits, prepare comprehensive evaluation reports, and submit them to higher authorities.
Provide specialized training and technical guidance to ensure the effective implementation of safety measures and the availability of protective equipment.
Monitor and assess potential risks, apply preventive safety measures, and focus on continuous improvement.
Collaborate with internal and external institutions to ensure compliance with local and international safety and security regulations.
Design and distribute safety signs, warning labels, emergency exit markers, and fire extinguisher instructions.
Promote a culture of chemical and biological safety within the college and raise community-wide awareness.
Rehabilitate undergraduate laboratories and chemical/biological storage areas to meet safety and security requirements.
Develop and implement sustainable strategies for managing hazardous chemical and biological waste with a focus on minimizing environmental and health impacts.
Work Plan:
Risk Management: Identify and assess potential risks, develop plans to reduce them, and monitor effectiveness.
Safety Procedures: Establish preventive measures, provide safety equipment, and train individuals on their use.
Hazardous Materials Training: Raise awareness about the risks of hazardous materials and train individuals on safe handling and emergency response.
Emergency Response: Develop emergency plans, train staff on response procedures, and provide necessary equipment.
Regular Inspections: Conduct routine inspections of laboratories and storage facilities to ensure compliance with safety standards.
Operational Manual for the Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Safety and Security Unit
The Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Safety and Security Unit is one of the vital units within academic and scientific institutions. It is dedicated to implementing occupational safety standards and ensuring the safe use of chemical, biological, and radiological materials in educational and research laboratories.
This manual aims to establish a clear organizational and procedural framework that guarantees the protection of personnel, students, property, and the environment from any potential hazards.
• The unit is responsible for following up on the implementation of the recommendations issued by the field visit committees conducted by the ministerial team formed under Ministerial Order No. (Q/J/1/146) dated 1/2/2024 and its subsequent attachments, as well as by the ministerial committee assigned to monitor chemical, biological, and radiological safety and security procedures, which was established under Ministerial Order No. (B T 9/10427) dated 15/10/2024.
• The unit shall be responsible for supervising the implementation of all chemical, biological, and radiological safety and security standards in the laboratories affiliated with the college, and for submitting reports and observations related to safety and security to the Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Safety and Security Division through the Assistant President of the University for Scientific Affairs.
• Conduct regular training courses for faculty members, students, and laboratory staff to train them on safety and security procedures.
• Organize workshops and lectures to raise awareness of the importance of chemical, biological, and radiological safety.
• Conduct regular visits to laboratories to ensure compliance with safety and security procedures.
• Promote a culture of responsibility and guide students and staff on the importance of adhering to chemical, biological, and radiological safety and security regulations through clear instructions for the safe handling of chemical, biological, and radiological materials in the college laboratories, while encouraging all personnel to comply with these guidelines.
